Do I need an attorney to get child custody parental rights removed?

I fear there is imminent danger of my ex husband trying to remove my 19 year old autistic daughter from my home. After 6 years of divorce I want his parental rights dissolved until he undergoes a psych evaluation. Can I go to family court with these requests or must I retain an attorney first?
