How to get child custody as a father?

I am a male nursing student and work part time. The mother and I were never married. I am extremely fearful that I will not be able to develop a full relationship with my son, who lives with his mother. Do fathers have fewer legal rights than mothers? Also, is there a possibility that I can attain full child custody?

Fathers have as many rights to their children as mothers do. If the mother is denying you access to your child you should file for joint custody or visitation. As far as full custody, that probably will not be granted unless there is something severely wrong with the mother. If the mother has been raising the child, a judge is not going to all of a sudden change that child's environment unless there is an absolute need.

Father's rights are no different than mother's rights. Yes, you can get custody. File a custody petition if family Court. I would talk to an attorney first.
