What are the repercussions of leaving the residence during a divorce?

I am going to inform my husband that I will be seeking divorce. We have been married for 16 years and have lived in the same residence for over 8 years. I have been informed that there may be legal ramifications if I leave the house during the divorce process. Is this true? How do I protect myself?

In most circumstances the only ramifications would be if there were children you left behind. To make sure there are no wrinkles that could cause you problems you should discuss your case in detail with a local divorce attorney. The cost of the consultation will likely be far less than the cost of a mistake you could make trying to do things yourself.
